EDUCATIONAL EXCURSION TO BHIGWAN BIRD SANCTUARY
Bigwan Bird Sanctuary, located in the district of Pune [Maharashtra], is renowned for its scenic beauty and rich biodiversity, especially its vibrant population of migratory and resident birds. The sanctuary spans across the backwaters of the Ujani Dam, serving as a vital resting and feeding ground for various species of migratory birds during the winter months.
The highlight of our excursion was birdwatching. Equipped with HD camera and the field guide, the students and teachers observed a multiple bird species, a few of them were seagulls, grey herons, flamingos, kingfisher, river tern, cormorants, openbill stork, purple moorhen, and many others. The experience of witnessing these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat was both breath-taking and educational.
During the excursion, discussions were held about the significance of preserving wetlands, understanding the delicate balance of nature, and how human activities impact these vital ecosystems. The trip aimed at instilling a sense of environmental responsibility among the students.
Twenty-six students were divided into groups and given the task of documenting the bird species they observed, noting their behaviours and interactions with the environment. This hands-on learning did inspire a sense of stewardship and a deeper connection to the environment among our students, which is invaluable for shaping responsible and environmentally conscious citizens. As we return from this memorable day of exploration, we are reminded of the importance of preserving our natural treasures, not only for the birds and wildlife but for the future of our planet.
