MIME COMPETITION ON THE THEME OF 'DE-ADDICTION: FIGHTING AGAINST DRUG-DEPENDENCY'

The Mime Competition on the theme of De-addiction: Fighting Against Drug Dependency was organized in College Conference Hall by the Department of English and Postgraduate Center in association with Poona College Internal Quality Assurance Cell [IQAC]. The event aimed to raise awareness about the pressing issue of drug dependency and addiction through the expressive art form of mime.

Five teams/performances in total spellbound the jam-packed audience by showcasing their acting talent, conveying a powerful message about the consequences of drug abuse. The theme of the competition was very creatively interpreted by each team - a mix of emotional and thought-provoking acts. The students utilized props, costumes, and body language to depict the struggles faced by individuals battling drug addiction, as well as the strategies to come out of the mess an addiction creates in one’s life. The commitment and dedication of the contestant teams were evident in their performances.

Dr. Mohd. Shakir Shaikh, Head, Department of Hindi, and Ms. Ayesha Shaikh, a teaching faculty from the Department of Commerce, adjudged the performances and appreciated the talent and potential of undergraduate students for bringing a life of a drug-addict alive on stage so to show how and at what level an(y) addiction can hamper family, social and national life. Dr. Mohd. Shakir Shaikh further said, 𝑻𝒉𝒊𝒔 𝑴𝒊𝒎𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝒊𝒔 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒚 𝒇𝒊𝒓𝒔𝒕 𝒌𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒏𝒕 𝒆𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒐𝒓𝒈𝒂𝒏𝒊𝒛𝒆𝒅 𝒊𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒉𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝑷𝒐𝒐𝒏𝒂 𝑪𝒐𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒈𝒆, 𝒂𝒔 𝒎𝒖𝒄𝒉 𝒂𝒔 𝑰 𝒓𝒆𝒎𝒆𝒎𝒃𝒆𝒓. Mr. Zameer Salim Sayyed and Dr. Simran Preet Kaur, Assistant Professors in the Department of English, were the Coordinators of this competition who provided a platform to the students not only to showcase their creative talent in a form of silent drama (Mime) but also to educate and raise awareness on the adverse effects of addiction of any type among the community.

Prof. (Dr.) Aftab Anwar Shaikh, Principal of Poona College, highlighted the significance of every attendant’s commitment to continue the fight against drug-dependence and provide support to those in need. The event concluded on a positive note that such initiatives will contribute to a society free from the clutches of drug addiction and create a brighter future for all. To sum up, in the words of Mr. Zameer Salim Sayyed, We don’t want the world to protect our youth from addiction, but we want to create a world where youth will need/seek no protection”.

The timely guidance and cooperation of Mr. Moinuddin Khan, Vice Principal, Poona College, Ms. Zeenat Merchant, Head, Department of English, and Dr. Ashwini Purude, Assistant Professor of English, was duly acknowledged by the coordinators.
