WORKSHOP ON PHONETICS

The Department of English organized a one day workshop on Phonetics. The workshop was conducted for the undergraduate as well as postgraduate students. Ms. Zeenat Merchant, Coordinator of the Workshop, highlighted the objective of the workshop which was to enable students to improve their pronunciation and gain competence in English language. “The faculty of speech separates human being from animals and effective and correct English separates one from the rest of the individuals. Therefore correct English is a must,” said Dr. S. S. Chopra, Senior academician and Linguist ,University of Pune, who was one of the Resource Persons during the Workshop. Mr. Asif Khan, Assistant Professor, Department of English, Poona College, and the second Resource Person of the workshop, introduced all the English vowel sounds and the way they are pronounced in isolation and in sentences. He exemplified how incorrect pronunciation can cause barriers to communication. Seventy delegates who participated in the workshop benefited from the ICT-based power point presentations and apt audio-visual illustrations.
