“The skill of
writing like an academic so to sound scholarly to the readers of your text puts
students on pedestal and distinguishes an individual from the rest”, said 𝑴𝒓. 𝒁𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒆𝒓 𝑺𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒎 𝑺𝒂𝒚𝒚𝒆𝒅, the Resource Person of the talk. Further he said, “There
are no good students or bad students. There are only good writers and bad
writers”, while highlighting how academic evaluation is mostly based on writing
ranging from personal notes to Ph. D. theses.
He oriented sixty-six
student-participants to the types of
academic writing. The focus was on reading for gist in the context of textual
details, quality of writing and accuracy in content.
The stories, essays, and poems prescribed to the
students in their English syllabus were explained 𝒊𝒏 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 on PowerPoint slides. The emphasis was placed on
steps such as reading the text with a goal of writing gist, formulating one or
two long descriptive questions, and at last writing their answers to tally
one’s understanding of the content, simplifying the What, Why, and How of
getting started while preparing for any examination/assessment.
